Have your say on plans for zebra crossing in Hadham Road, Bishop’s Stortford

Consultation has finally begun on plans for a pedestrian crossing for Hadham Road in Bishop’s Stortford.

Campaigners have been lobbying for the safety measure for more than five years and are urging residents to back highways authority Hertfordshire County Council’s (HCC) proposal.

Helen Fletcher started the fight for the crossing between Maze Green Road and Bells Hill to stop children running the gauntlet of cars and lorries on their way to schools including Bishop’s Stortford College, St Mary’s Catholic School and Northgate and Windhill21 primaries.

The consultation closes on Friday September 27, and Helen and her fellow campaigners hope positive responses will secure construction.

As well as the zebra crossing, the authority proposes footway widening including widening into HCC-owned land currently used as front gardens, a new uncontrolled dropped kerb crossing and a rerouted footpath with new guardrails.

Helen said: “I’m super-chuffed that as well as a crossing, HCC are proposing widening the footpath and adding guardrails on part of the footpath on the [Bishop’s Stortford] College side of the road as well.”

The consultation is the first part of a two-stage process. The comments received will help the council finalise its proposal before publishing a notice for a new crossing.
