Josh Dean: Hertford and Stortford’s new Labour MP triggers by-election – by quitting town council

Josh Dean’s General Election victory means a new vote is coming up for some East Herts residents.

Before winning the Hertford and Stortford seat for Labour, the 24-year-old university student was a member of Hertford Town Council.

Residents of Castle Ward are set to vote for his replacement in a parish by-election later this summer if the seat is contested.

After a celebration on Sunday with party supporters to mark his win over Conservative Julie Marson, Mr Dean has been getting to grips with his new duties as an MP.

He had a briefing from Hertfordshire Constabulary after fighting broke out in Hertford town centre on Sunday night following England’s defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Germany.

He said: “We had a productive discussion and I will be working closely with them going forward to ensure our streets are safe.”

Also, he is recruiting an office manager, a constituency support manager and a senior parliamentary assistant as he sets up his office at Westminster and in Bishop’s Stortford.

There will be a second Hertford Town Council by-election if the Bengeo North seat vacated by Green Party councillor Paul Williams is contested.

Albury Parish Council also has a vacancy following the resignation of Cllr Anne Sargisson.
