Hertfordshire Lieutenancy team brings Commonwealth values to Thorn Grove Primary School
Commonwealth values were the theme of a visit to Thorn Grove Primary School by members of the Hertfordshire Lieutenancy, which represents King Charles in the county.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, currently Robert Voss, is the main link between the monarch and his people in the county, upholding the dignity of the Crown and serving the community. He is supported by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and by Deputy Lieutenants.
Year 6 pupils at the Bishop’s Stortford school welcomed Deputy Lieutenant Alison Trew and Marion Brown, chair of the lieutenancy education panel. They gave a presentation about the monarchy, Commonwealth and British values.
The children were fascinated by some of the official items worn by lieutenants and enjoyed a group exercise, considering what Thorn Grove might need to do to prepare for a royal visit.
Teacher Kathy Canavan said: “The immersive session meant all pupils were engaged, motivated and interested. This was especially evident in the pupils’ confident presentation of their ideas.
“One child explained how his group believed Commonwealth values are like seeds. If we live by one value, then, like a seed, our values will soon grow into a tree and all the other values will branch out, touching other people’s lives and ours in a positive way. I think that is a lesson for us all!”
Lord-Lieutenants were first appointed by Henry VIII in the 1500s to assume the military duties of the Sheriff; until 1871, office-holders were responsible for organising the counties’ militias. Today, the King appoints Lord-Lieutenants on the advice of the Prime Minister.
