Herts residents surrender 50 firearms as part of Turkish gun amnesty

Fifty firearms were surrendered during an amnesty by Hertfordshire Constabulary as part of a national campaign.

Residents handed in Turkish-manufactured top-venting blank-firing (TVBF) firearms, which can easily be converted to active guns.

During February, 29 of these weapons were surrendered, along with 21 other firearms which fell outside this criterion.

Supt Clare Smith, who led the campaign in Herts, said: “We had a great response to this latest weapons amnesty, managing to remove many of these types of potentially lethal weapons from circulation, along with other types of firearms.

“Fortunately, incidents involving firearms are uncommon in Hertfordshire and through our continuing work to reduce the numbers of guns and knives in public ownership, we can make sure our streets remain safe.”
