Hockerill Anglo-European College history buffs beat opponents from Europe and the Middle East – including a team from Eton College in the final – to win an international quiz title in Paris.

The awesome foursome from the Dunmow Road state secondary were crowned champions in the International History Bee and Bowl Competition Varsity Division (seniors).

Year 12 trio Edward Braeckman, Adam Wilson and Thomas Wilson and Edward's Year 10 brother George triumphed in the University Challenge-style event.

The students, who were already British champions, competed against teams from Great Britain, France, Italy, Switzerland and Qatar to reach the final against Eton.

Having already beaten the Berkshire boys in the qualifying rounds of the competition in the UK, the Hockerill quartet knew their opponents would be keen to reverse that result but were nonetheless confident and emerged again as the stronger team.

Adam Wilson was also crowned individual European geography bee champion.

Team coach Marina Fraser, Hockerill's head of humanities, said: "We are immensely proud of the boys. They have a fierce intellect and an amazing knowledge of history. They practise diligently each week. This is a great achievement."

This is not the first success for the Braeckmans and Wilsons, who are current Bishop's Stortford Rotary quiz champions and who, in 2016 as juniors, won the European championship.
