Fashion Flooring: Interior designer Kathryn Hughes makes herself at home in new Bishop's Stortford shop
Interior designer Kathryn Hughes is making herself at home in Bishop’s Stortford town centre.
Fashion Flooring and Interiors has opened a new shop, Fashion Interiors, in the former Cancer Research shop in Potter Street which was devastated by fire in July 2018.
The brand is already well established in High Street since returning to Stortford in October 2017.
Tony Orme, now retired, set up the first Fashion Flooring outlet in the town in 1992 and relocated in 2003. His son Dave works in the business as a flooring specialist, with colleague Anthony O’Connell, while Kathryn masterminds the interior design arm.
For her, the new premises were a critical step forward.
“The biggest issue I've faced is people not knowing there's an interiors side to the business as it's upstairs in the High Street shop,” she said. “Many people think we just do flooring so they don’t come in to find out about everything else we have to offer.
"The new shop is concentrating more on lighting and home accessories as these lend themselves more to a high street location that has more footfall.
“The curtain and flooring side of the business is staying in the High Street shop; as they're more specialist, people will go looking for them, whereas the accessories are much more of an impulse buy.”
The expansion has created new jobs for the town. Her department will soon have five staff, up from two.
