Homeless dog wins Sawbo's heart at Fun on the Field

Magic, a homeless Labrador-Staffordshire cross, won Best in Show and Musical Sits at the dog show at the centre of Sawbridgeworth’s annual Fun on the Field family day, capturing the town’s heart.

Other winners include Lexi, a Husky who won Prettiest Bitch, and Max, a golden Cocker Spaniel awarded most Handsome Dog. Gabbie, a therapy Chihuahua, came top in the Golden Oldie category. Pulling off his socks won Best Trick for Ember, a Labrador Springer cross trained by Libby Martin, 6, and her grandmother Jane Mortimer.

The dog show raised almost £500 for Hanovia Gold Animal Trust, a rescue centre just outside Hertford. It remained the centre of the new-look summer event run by Sawbridgeworth Town Council, designed to be a little quieter this year and moved from early July to late August to make way for a bigger May Fayre.

Now in its fifth year, the free Bullfields event offered live entertainment, food stalls, bar and beer tent. New additions this year included the popular Bungee Ropes and BumberCarz.

"It's a good community day where people can come and meet each other, have a chat, have a beer and listen to music," said Alderman Roger Beeching.

First up on stage were the bands formed by local music school Creative Music in a special Summer Workshop. Also performing were local singers Abbie Middleton and Ben Crank, an ex Leventhorpe pupil. The school’s caretaker John Bambury entertained the crowds with his Shadows Tribute Act. Local band the Ghias offered an Accoustics versions owing to being one member short.

“It seems like a great community,” said Lauren Brown, who moved to Sawbridgeworth from London three weeks ago with husband Colin and sons Tyler, 9, and Cameron, 7.

Mayor John Burmicz said he was impressed by the number of local companies manning the stalls, such as Lorna Bergh and Mark Wadley who quit the corporate world to start L&M Bespoke Designs, making luxury soy wax candles out of their home in Gilders.
