A homeless man’s tent was set on fire in Southmill Road last Thursday evening between 6.45pm and 7.30pm.

Firefighters who extinguished the blaze concluded that an arsonist had started the fire as flammable liquid was discovered inside the tent.

Police were told that four men were seen loitering in the area shortly before the tent went up in flames.

The victim has since been housed in Buntingford.

Two days previously (June 4), another fire was started intentionally, this time in one of Bishop’s Stortford rugby club’s outbuildings.

At 6.45am, police were called by the Silver Leys club after members had seen the arsonists flee from the building towards the town centre.

Some equipment was damaged in the fire.
