St Clare Hospice lottery: £10,000 rollover jackpot winner Derek Owen thought call to say he had won was a prank

A long-time St Clare Hospice supporter has been rewarded for his loyalty by winning the £10,000 jackpot in the charity's lottery rollover.

But when a hospice representative rang Derek Owen, of Sawbridgeworth, to say he had won, he thought it was a prank call.

“We’ve been playing the St Clare Hospice lottery since it started over 20 years ago and I never expected to win – I never win anything!” he said.

“My wife Pauline’s father was cared for at the hospice back in 1994 and we just saw playing the lottery as a good way to support the charity for the good work it does. I would encourage others to join the lottery so that even more local families can be supported by the hospice.”

The rollover prize, which had not been won for 50 weeks, had grown to the maximum of £10,000. The last rollover jackpot was £10,000 which was won in July 2020.

St Clare lottery manager Paula Fogg said: “We're delighted that the rollover has been won, after 50 weeks of waiting! It had reached a nail-biting stage as we waited to see whose lucky number would be drawn, so it’s great to have finally found a winner.

"The rollover will now begin accumulating again, but players always have the chance to win a guaranteed prize of £1,000 every week.”
