‘More people than ever’ as Stansted villagers turn out to pay their respects on Remembrance Sunday
A huge crowd turned out for Stansted’s Remembrance Sunday service at St John’s Church Memorial Gardens.
The event started with its familiar procession down Chapel Hill as village dignitaries, service personnel from Carver Barracks, Stansted Fire Station and representatives of a wide variety of Stansted organisations united to pay their respects to those who had fought and died in conflicts.
The service was led by the Rev Helen Flack.
Stansted Parish Council chair Cllr Maureen Caton was among those who laid a wreath at the war memorial, along with Cllr Geoffrey Sell on behalf of Uttlesford District Council.
“It was a really, really well attended event – I think we had more people than ever this year,” said Mrs Caton. “It was a very poignant service.”
For the first time, youngsters from Stansted Youth Club formed part of the procession, joining Guides and Scouts and representatives of all the village schools, including Forest Hall School.
The parish council took photos of the event from the top of St John’s Church, giving a bird’s-eye view of proceedings.
A collection raised £540.68 for the Royal British Legion.
