The phrase "the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker" is used as a term for a collective of people of various trades or businesses, writes Gina Thomas, the Bishop's Stortford BID (Business Improvement District) manager.

It seems apt this week as we held our annual general meeting (AGM) last night (Tuesday) and commend the winner of the Mayor's Business of the Month award.

The BID is led and governed by a board, currently comprising 13 people who represent Bishop's Stortford town centre businesses. All these people are volunteers who give up their time to be a part of the organisation, attending monthly board meetings. They are also on a sub-committee to help us plan for each area of our business plan.

Together they oversee the financial, managerial and operational activities of the BID. They play a crucial role and it's important they come from all sectors of business to give us their experience and knowledge.

At our AGM we re-elected and appointed new board members. We now look ahead to all the activities and initiatives we want – and hopefully are able – to deliver in 2022.

And now for the butcher! We are very lucky to have an excellent one on our high street and I am delighted to say their excellent customer service has been recognised this month, as Cllr Keith Warnell has selected Humphreys in Market Square from all nominations received to be his Mayor's Business of the Month award winner for September.

Jane Price, who has lived in Bishop's Stortford for almost 25 years, started shopping with Humphreys when the first lockdown came in March last year and the supermarket queues were extremely long.

She said: "We haven't looked back. All of their meat is of an exceptional quality, the best we've tasted, and they have a large variety of products on offer, including many great marinades and stuffings available to create many different dishes. The staff are all so helpful and friendly. We will remain loyal customers of theirs."

We'd love to hear more nominations to highlight the brilliant businesses we have in the town centre. Please email us on info@bishopsstortfordbid.co.uk.

Look out for our Hallowe'en events – a trail event in half term and a #ScarySelfie in Jackson Square on Sunday October 31. More details on www.discoverstortford.co.uk and in this column next time.
