Bishop’s Stortford High School student Fin Macfie cycles equivalent distance from Land’s End to John o’ Groats on an exercise bike in aid of Head for Change

A 16-year-old Bishop’s Stortford boy who admits “not being active or sporty” cycled the equivalent distance from Land’s End to John o’ Groats on indoor exercise bikes for charity.

Riding in his garage, Fin Macfie, a Year 11 GCSE student at The Bishop’s Stortford High School (TBSHS), aimed to complete the 1,189-mile challenge and raise £1,189 for Head for Change in two months.

Despite the bike breaking with 120 miles to go, family and friends rallied round to make sure he could keep cycling, lending him their bikes in their homes and enabling him to finish in just five weeks.

Although admitting he was “unfit and inactive”, Fin Macfie completed his 1,189-mile cycling challenge with three weeks to spare

Fin completed the challenge on Saturday (March 8) and has so far raised £1,825 for Head for Change, whose aim is to create a safer sporting environment for sporting heroes past, present and future.

He was inspired by former Welsh rugby international Alix Popham, whom he heard speak at Bear Grylls’ Gone Wild festival in Norfolk last summer about his life with early onset dementia.

Fin said: “Despite not being active or sporty myself, I’m surrounded by people, close friends and family who are. Listening to Alix speak made me realise just how important it is to look after your brain as well as your body.”
