Jackson Square branch of Claire’s to close before Christmas

Bishop’s Stortford’s branch of the accessory chain, Claire’s, is to shut before Christmas.

When the business collapsed into administration in the UK and elsewhere in August, a total of 2,150 jobs were put at risk.

However, Modella Capital, which also bought the WH Smith high street stores, stepped in to buy 156 Claire’s shops, saving around 1,000 staff.

The outlet in Jackson Square is understood to be one of 145 not included in the deal, and a closing down sale is under way.

The American retailer launched in 1961 and operated in 37 countries with over 3,000 stores at the height of its popularity before competition from online retailers bit into profits.

Elsewhere, The Party Box has also left Bishop’s Stortford town centre. The trader has shut its shop in The Dells and reopened at H@me & Eat in Stansted Road.

Other recent high street departures this month include the Giggling Squid in North Street, which shut last week.

Last month, Wood Grill in Station Road shut its doors. Its sister restaurant in Cambridge Road, Stansted, remains open, along with newly acquired The Gem, formerly Linden House, at the top of Chapel Hill in the village.
