Jackson Square on schedule for TK Maxx opening next summer

Jackson Square is on schedule to hand over a purpose-built unit to designer discount retailer TK Maxx in July next year.

The American business is expected to take eight to 10 weeks to fit out the store before the new flagship of the Bishop’s Stortford shopping centre opens.

The Indie was invited behind the scenes to see progress on the project, which began in June 2023 after years of planning.

TK Maxx’s arrival is set to create up to 50 new jobs in full-time, part-time and casual roles.

The steel structure for the north extension to the precinct, which is owned by Legal and General, is now complete, marking a significant step forward in the redevelopment plans.

This paves the way for the next phase of construction, as contractor Faithdean plc begins work on the internal floors of this area.

The steel structure for the east extension is scheduled for erection in December, with completion expected before Christmas.

Centre manager Michael Smith said: “These developments are crucial steps towards welcoming TK Maxx to Jackson Square in its impressive new 20,000 sq ft unit.

“We’re on schedule to hand over the unit to TK Maxx in July 2025, allowing for an eight- to 10-week fit-out period before opening.

“This addition to our retail offerings is sure to excite shoppers and draw more visitors to our centre.

Mr Smith added: “Despite some unforeseen groundwork challenges, we’ve been working closely with local stakeholders to address these issues, ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality in our work.

“The community’s patience and support during this process has been invaluable and greatly appreciated.

“To minimise disruption during the construction phase, we’ve established a temporary pit lane on Bridge Street, with permission granted until Friday November 22.

“We want to assure the community that this arrangement has been carefully planned to ensure that the vital Christmas trading period for the town will not be impacted, allowing businesses and shoppers to enjoy the festive season without hindrance.”

Mamdani Opticians, F Hinds jewellers, and Photosound have all moved to new units in the centre as part of the transformation for TK Maxx.

Mr Smith said: “We’re committed to creating an enhanced shopping destination that will benefit our entire community.

“While we’ve faced some challenges, these have only strengthened our resolve to deliver an exceptional result.

“We’re excited about the positive changes taking shape and look forward to unveiling more improvements in the coming months.

“The redevelopment continues to progress, with internal changes to the main square area ongoing.

“These works are part of our broader vision to create an impressive new internal public realm, additional retail units and a new entrance on The Causeway.

“We encourage the Bishop’s Stortford community to continue supporting local businesses during this exciting phase of development.

“Your support not only helps our retailers but also contributes to the vibrant future we’re building together.”

Over the next few weeks, shoppers will notice the internal hoardings in the square move to accommodate the internal changes around the atrium.

TK Maxx in the UK and the rest of Europe is part of TJX Companies Inc. The first British store opened in 1994 and there are now more than 350 across the country. The brand opened a second store in London’s Oxford Street this month.
