King’s Ambulance Service Medal for two dedicated East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust workers

Two dedicated East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) workers have been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Lee Umpleby, a senior paramedic and community advocate, received the prestigious King’s Ambulance Service Medal, which rewards individuals who have demonstrated exceptional devotion to duty, leadership, and a lasting contribution to the ambulance service.

Lee began his career with EEAST 20 years ago, qualifying as a paramedic just three years after joining as a technician. In 2009, he volunteered with the Canvey Island Community First Responders.

The same medal also went to Jemma Varela, head of clinical operations for Suffolk and North East Essex.

She began her career with EEAST in 2003 and has since held roles across training and education, patient safety, and operational management. Her leadership and clinical expertise have been instrumental in shaping high standards of care across the region.

She was the first female critical care paramedic to serve with the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
