Emergency services at Bishop's Stortford rail crossing after 'person hit by train'

Police taped off a rail crossing in Bishop's Stortford as emergency services dealt with reports of a person being hit by a train.

The incident happened at the Cannons Mill Lane pedestrian crossing in the early hours of Saturday (August 28).

British Transport Police were called to the line at 2.11am following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

A spokesman for BTP said: "Paramedics also attended, however sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death."

The incident led to Greater Anglia trains from London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport and Cambridge being terminated at Stortford for several hours. The lines were reopened by 10.15am.

A spokesman for the train operator said earlier: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Bishop's Stortford and Stansted Mountfitchet, believed to be a person having been hit by a train, services are unable to run between Bishop's Stortford and Stansted Mountfitchet.

"The line has been blocked, as a result, to allow the emergency response team to investigate."
