A lorry hit the roof of one of the oldest buildings in Bishop's Stortford on Monday afternoon (February 24).

The vehicle, believed to have been a Brake Bros lorry, struck the Black Lion pub in Bridge Street at around 2.20pm.

The driver reported the crash to staff at the pub, which was built in the mid-1500s.

A staff member said that he was restocking and was unaware of the incident until the lorry driver came in and alerted him.

Police attended the scene. A stretch of pavement where dislodged roof slates had landed was cordoned off.

The fire and rescue service has been called to make loose tiles on the roof safe.
