Police investigating a fatal collision on the M11 near Bishop's Stortford say they need to speak to anyone who saw a blue Ford Focus before or after the smash.

The incident, involving a motorbike and a car, happened on the southbound carriageway last Wednesday (January 16) at around 5am.

The bike rider, a 63-year-old man from Dunmow, died at the scene. The car driver involved failed to stop.

The incident resulted in the closure of both carriageways of the motorway – southbound between junctions 8 (Stortford/Stansted Airport) and 7 (Harlow), and northbound between junctions 6 (M25) and 8 – for several hours while officers gathered evidence, causing widespread jams in the area until the M11 reopened fully at 3.20pm.

Officers need to speak to anyone who saw a blue Ford Focus being driven on the A120 in the area of Stansted Airport, on the M11 between Birchanger and Harlow, or on the A414 towards Harlow between 4.40am and 5.15am.

Det Sgt Steve Holmes, from Essex Police's serious collision investigation unit, said: “Although this was early in the morning, we believe there was a reasonable amount of traffic on the roads and I don’t believe we have spoken to the drivers of all those vehicles.

“We need to speak to anyone who saw a blue Ford Focus and how it was being driven.

“We particularly need to speak to anyone who has dashcam footage of the vehicle.

“Sadly, someone has died and it’s really important we establish exactly what happened.”

A 37-year-old Harlow man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and driving while unfit through drink or drugs has been released on police bail until February 11.
