The M11 is closed in both directions south of Bishop's Stortford after a lorry crashed into a bridge.
The motorway is shut between junction 7 (Harlow/A414) and junction 8 (Stansted Airport/A120).
Traffic heading north towards Cambridge and south towards London is being diverted via the A414 through Harlow, the A10 and the A120 at Puckeridge.
Officers from Essex Police and Highways England are in attendance.
Highways England is warning of delays of around an hour for motorists approaching the closures, with additional journey times also expected on diversion routes.
Traffic is slow-moving through Sawbridgeworth as a result of motorists ignoring the official diversion route.
