Storm Isha: A1060 between Hatfield Heath and Leaden Roding blocked by tree

The main road from Bishop’s Stortford to Chelmsford was blocked by a large tree which was brought down by strong winds during Storm Isha.

Closer to town, there were reports on Facebook of fallen trees on the A120 bypass, Dunmow Road and off Stansted Road as high winds and heavy rain swept through overnight.

Hertfordshire police said that a tree was partially blocking the A1250 Dunmow Road near Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club. Cones were placed as a precaution until the tree was removed by Herts Highways in the early hours.

A tree fell across Cannons Mill Lane, and on the bypass, a tree fell near Stortford Fields, although the person who alerted police had already removed it from the road but was concerned that others may fall.

In Much Hadham, a tree was blocking New Barns Lane. Police referred the incident to Herts Highways.

Amateur meteorologist Andy White, of Thorley Park, said that he recorded a wind gust of 43mph – 1mph more than during Storm Henk in the first week of January – and 10mm (0.4in) of rain, although he added: “Rainfall can be tricky in very strong winds, i.e. is the collection receptacle collecting everything when the rain is at times horizontal?”

The large tree blocking the Stortford-Chelmsford road came down between Hatfield Heath and Leaden Roding. Police hoped to be able to reopen the route by 6am.

Essex Police said at 4.50am: “Officers have been dealing with several weather-related incidents across the Uttlesford district this evening (Sunday), including a large tree blocking the road on the A1060 between Hatfield Heath and Leaden Roding. The road is currently closed.

“Officers are working with colleagues from UK Power Network and Essex Highways to clear the tree and hope to open the road by 6am Monday.

“Please take extra care when travelling as there is surface water and debris from trees across many of the roads.”
