Man, 52, dies in fall from block of flats in Riverside in Bishop’s Stortford
A 52-year-old man fell to his death from a fifth-floor window in Bishop’s Stortford town centre.
The incident happened on Friday evening at a block of flats in Riverside in the vicinity of restaurant Skew and JD Wetherspoon pub the Port Jackson.
Police were called at around 9.15pm with reports of concern for the welfare of a person.
Riverside was closed to traffic joining from Station Road and South Street while emergency services dealt with the incident. The road closures were lifted at 5.15am on Saturday.
The Port Jackson’s smoking area was cleared at the request of police and the pub then took the decision to close.
A spokeswoman for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: “We facilitated moving the public away from the area.”
As is standard procedure in the event of a person’s death following contact with police, the force has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the police watchdog for England and Wales, which is now investigating the circumstances.
