Man in court on assault, theft and drug charges after Jackson Square shoplifting incident

A member of the public was assaulted by a shoplifter as he stepped in to help a security guard detain the thief.

The incident happened at Sainsbury’s in Jackson Square shopping centre, Bishop’s Stortford, on Saturday afternoon (June 4).

A spokeswoman for Herts police said: “It was reported that a member of security staff had attempted to detain a suspected shoplifter as he left the store.

“As he did so, a scuffle ensued and a member of the public attempted to intervene, sustaining a scratch to his neck in the process. The security guard was uninjured. The suspect fled the area before being arrested nearby by police.”

Several bottles of alcohol were recovered along with a quantity of cannabis.

Kenneth Anglin, 51, from Margate, Kent, appeared at St Albans Magistrates’ Court on Monday (June 6) charged with two counts of assault, theft and possession of a controlled drug.
