MP Julie Marson weclomes Virgin Media O2's gigabit switch-on for Bishop's Stortford and Sawbridgeworth
Bishop’s Stortford MP Julie Marson has welcomed Virgin Media O2’s gigabit switch-on in parts of the town and Sawbridgeworth.
The supplier is promising broadband speeds 20 times faster than the local average, with a mean download rate of 1,130Mbps (megabits per second).
The service, which is the fastest available from any of the major broadband providers in the UK, enables consumers to do more online – from working, streaming, socialising and gaming – all at the same time on multiple devices under the same roof. It also prepares homes for future technologies and applications.
As part of Tuesday's (September 7) upgrade, Virgin Media O2 has connected thousands of homes in the town centre, Hockerill, Sawbridgeworth and Lower Sheering to gigabit speed, joining 10 million other households across the country.
Conservative Mrs Marson said: “This is good news for people and businesses in and around Bishop’s Stortford. Fast and reliable internet access has become an essential feature of our daily lives and is needed in every part of the constituency.
"I'm really pleased that Virgin Media O2 are helping with our mission to boost connectivity for the area and hope local people will reap the benefits as soon as possible.”
Virgin Media O2 has committed to invest at least £10bn over the next five years in the UK and is exploring options to deploy fibre to millions more homes across the country.
This increased access is contributing to the Government’s target for at least 85% of UK premises to have access to gigabit speeds by 2025.
Once Virgin Media O2 has completed its upgrade later this year, the company will have contributed almost two-thirds of the Government’s minimum broadband ambition four years ahead of target.
