Bishop's Stortford church volunteers to tackle loneliness
A Bishop's Stortford church has set up a new team to combat loneliness in the Hockerill area.
The Neighbourhood Chaplains will offer practical help, befriending and connections to local groups, charities and services.
The volunteers from the BSCA Church, based at the Hockerill Christian Centre in Dunmow Road, "will make time to chat to everyone, regardless of their background".
Their initiative is part of a nationwide campaign to support anyone who is feeling isolated and alone, especially those experiencing a life change, poor health, a family break-up or bereavement.
The trained and DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked volunteers wear branded clothing and carry a photo identity badge.
Leader Steve Prince said: "As a result of offering Neighbourhood Chaplains here in Hockerill, we hope we're able to show God's love to the community in practical as well as spiritual ways."
That includes 'helping hands' for simple daily tasks and a chance to book regular visits for a chat.
Volunteers will also invite neighbours to the church's Café Connect at the centre from 10am on Thursday mornings, offering a warm space and free tea or coffee, cakes and a light, hot lunch.
Neighbourhood Chaplains will also offer prayer and links to the church for those who want to explore faith.
