Herts and Essex High School girls win Bishop's Stortford inter-schools quiz

A team from Herts and Essex High School emerged victorious as the Rotary Club of Bishop’s Stortford held its annual inter-schools quiz tournament.

Eight teams of four from Stortford secondary schools took part in the contest with its University Challenge-style format, with each quartet consisting of two sixth-formers and two Year 11 students.

Hosts Bishop’s Stortford College, Herts & Essex High School and The Bishop's Stortford High School all fielded A and B teams. They were joined by teams from St Mary’s and Birchwood. All were cheered on by parents and other supporters.

After four initial heats and two semi-finals, the Herts & Essex and College A teams met in the final, with the Warwick Road secondary winning by 310 points to 150.

The quartet of captain Aimée Schilder (Year 13), Katie Swallow (Y12), Elizabeth Clune and Beth Hannant (both Y11) all made solid contributions, demonstrating an impressive general knowledge.

Rotary club president Brian Morgan presented a cup to the winners and certificates to all participants.

Mike Tomkys was quizmaster, Jane Mitchell was timekeeper and David and Hilary Green were scorers. The event, which took place on Monday March 14, was organised by Rotarian Bernie Cotton.
