Councils host special events to remember life and legacy of the Queen





An open-air public tribute service to Queen Elizabeth II will take place in Hertford at lunchtime on Friday (Sept 16).

The event, hosted by East Herts Council chairman Cllr Ian Devonshire, will give thanks for Her Majesty's life and reign, and will include formal tributes, music and a minute's silence.

Cllr Devonshire, who represents Much Hadham, said: "I am deeply moved by the outpouring of tributes and heartfelt thanks expressed by our community in recent days.

"Friday's service will give everyone the opportunity to come together, in a shared moment, to commemorate a truly remarkable woman and Queen whose life and legacy will impact for many generations to come."

The service will start at 1pm on the paved area by the flagpole outside the council offices in Wallfields, Hertford (SG13 8EQ).

Guests will be standing for the service, which will last up to 30 minutes. Anyone with disability or special access requirements can email esther.piper@eastherts.gov.uk. Proceedings will be live-streamed on East Herts Council's Facebook page.

The chairman of Hertfordshire County Council, Cllr Annie Brewster, has called an extraordinary meeting of the authority to reflect upon and remember the Queen's life and reign.

The meeting will be held on Thursday (Sept 15) at 10am in the council chamber at County Hall, Hertford. Members of the public can attend or watch online at www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/watchmeetings.

Only essential council services will operate on bank holiday Monday (Sept 19) so staff can pay their respects during the state funeral of the Queen.

All staff working on Sunday evening will have the opportunity to take part in the national one-minute silence at 8pm.
