Affectionately known as 'Wonky Legs', Luna the German shepherd dog has forged a place in the hearts of her new family – but they are keen to find a solution to her mobility issues.

Luna was rescued by a charity from almost certain death in Bosnia-Herzegovina and eventually was taken under the wing of Pat Clark at Mutts In Distress, the dog shelter in Little Hallingbury.

She then found a home with Stortford hedgehog rescue woman Lynne Garner, who has posted an appeal for help creating long-lasting leg protectors for the disabled dog.

Luna had a deformity in her front legs which meant she struggled to walk and, when she did, suffered pain from cuts and grazes as her legs dragged on the ground.

Thanks to a GoFundMe crowdfunder launched by Mutts In Distress, Luna had three major operations in the space of 14 months to straighten her legs, but she still needs protection to enable her to continue to lead a pain-free life.

Lynne described Luna as a diva who is quite stubborn – a characteristic which she believes has helped keep her going.

"She was very difficult at first," said Lynne. "But she's a lot better after being trained by Pat at Mutts.

"The aim of the exercise was to give her a pain-free, happy life. She has that but she needs the protectors to continue that."

Lynne made her own red leg protectors for Luna but they need to be more long-lasting.

"I need to find either a local saddle maker who is up for the challenge or a local diver who can recommend a UK-based (preferably within easy reach of Bishop's Stortford) who may be able to help, as I've been using neoprene [synthetic rubber] with some success," she said.

The Mutts fundraiser has so far raised more than £22,000 with the aim of paying for the treatment of seven disabled dogs from abroad.

The GoFundMe appeal stated that the dogs needing treatment were a mix of German shepherds, golden retrievers, cross breeds and a husky.
