Painting sets new record for Sworders

The hammer went down on a new sale record for Stansted fine art auctioneers Sworders.

Cedric Morris' oil on canvas, entitled Foxglove, fetched £204,160 at last week’s Modern British and 20th Century Art sale.

The still-life depicting floxgloves and other English garden flowers came up for sale with an estimate of £30,000-£50,000, but the price soared for the currently popular avant-garde artist and was snapped up by a London dealer, who also purchased two more of the artist's paintings.

The seller will give part of the proceeds of the sale to the Benton End House and Garden Trust - a new charity that intends setting up the former home of Sir Cedric Morris as a centre for artistic and horticultural education.

The painting had been in the vendor's family since the 1960s.
