Pen pal friendships flourish between residents at care home and school pupils

Residents at a Stansted care home have not let the pandemic stop them from making new friends.

An intergenerational pen pal initiative has developed after Mountfitchet House Care Home received letters from Key Stage 2 pupils at Birchanger CofE Primary School.

Residents of the Coltsfield home were delighted to hear from their friends down the road at the start of the year. The pupils’ words gave them the opportunity to reminisce about their own school years, families and childhoods as they wrote back.

And the scheme is set to continue with plans for pupils and residents to eventually meet in person.

Home manager Jane Maxwell, said: "Intergenerational relationships have proven to be enriching for both sides, as they provide an opportunity for children and residents to learn from each other.

"There is no doubt that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship between our home and pupils at the school so we look forward to receiving more letters soon!"
