Pursuit police recover weapons from abandoned car linked to burglary

Police found a Japanese sword, two knives and a knuckleduster in a car linked to a burglary in Harlow that they were pursuing in Elsenham.

The incident happened late Friday night (July 26) when officers on patrol in Hall Road became aware of two vehicles – a silver Ford Focus and an LDV flatbed truck – being driven in a suspicious manner.

Essex Police – Uttlesford District said on Facebook in the early hours of Saturday: “After following the vehicles for a short distance, one [the Ford Focus] made off and the other [the LDV truck] was abandoned, with the driver not hanging around to chat!

“Despite a lengthy search by the police helicopter, sadly the driver was not located.

“The [Ford Focus] was found abandoned a short while later near to Ugley.” It was ditched beneath the M11 bridge that crosses the narrow lane near the Shaftesbury Cycling Club bungalow.

Both vehicles were recovered for forensic analysis in the hope of identifying the occupants.

Police said on Facebook: “Inside the vehicle several weapons were located and have been taken off the streets.

“Despite not getting the occupants (yet), we are certain that our officers have disrupted their plans and prevented serious crime occurring.”

A spokeswoman for Essex Police told the Indie on Sunday: “Officers were involved in a pursuit of a vehicle at around 11.20pm on Hall Road in Elsenham on Friday (July 26).

“This followed intelligence around the vehicle being involved in an ongoing burglary investigation in Harlow.

“The drivers of the vehicle decamped close to Bugle Close in Stansted and ran from officers.

“When searching the car, officers located two knives and knuckledusters. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone with information about either vehicle is asked to call Essex Police on 101 or report it via the force’s website at https://www.essex.police.uk/. Please cite incident number EP-20240726-1557.
