Bishop’s Stortford rugby club’s Chindits XV to play Royston for Max Oliver Cup in memory of popular captain
A much-loved and much-missed Bishop’s Stortford rugby club captain will be remembered at a match in his honour.
The Max Oliver Cup will take place between the Silver Leys club’s fourth XV, the Chindits, and Royston RFC in honour of the 31-year-old former Chindits skipper who died suddenly of a cardiac arrest while on his way to work in September last year.
There is a tragic link between the two clubs as Royston lost one of their players last season – and his last game was against the Chindits.
It is hoped the match on Sunday September 14 (kick-off 11.30am) will be the first of many in memory of Max, whose father Perry is a former president of the Silver Leys club.
Club members have joined family and friends of Max in raising money to fund screening sessions by heart charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.
An appeal has realised £57,000 and will fund screening for 800 young people. Two screening sessions will be held at the club next year.
