Rye Street shut as woman is taken ill at the wheel of her car

A woman was taken to hospital after apparently falling ill at the wheel of her car while driving along Rye Street in Bishop’s Stortford on Monday morning (Sept 30).

The incident, involving a Honda CR-V, happened at about 8.15am between the Bourne Brook bridge and the roundabout junction with Michaels Road, Farnham Road and Hazelend Road.

A spokesman for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: “The vehicle left the road after what appears to be a medical episode for the female driver.”

Paramedics from the East of England Ambulance Service and a Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service crew attended.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “One ambulance was sent to Rye Street this morning following reports of a road traffic collision. One woman was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital [in Harlow] for further assessment and care.”

The road was closed while the driver was attended to, causing rush-hour queues in both directions.

A passing motorist commented on Facebook: “There was a car in the bushes as I passed. Several school kids were there so hoping everyone is ok.”
