Sawbridgeworth gets that sinking feeling over River Stort towpath
Sawbridgeworth has been “left out” when it comes to upkeep of the towpath along the River Stort.
Cllr Annelise Furnace told Monday's town council meeting the path was in poor condition compared to other sections.
“It should be accessible to people all year round,” she said.
Councillors decided to write to the Canal and River Trust – the guardian of 2,000 miles of rivers and canals in England and Wales – to invite a representative to a meeting.
The River Stort is 24 miles (38km) long and flows from just south of Langley, near Saffron Walden, in a generally southerly direction through Clavering, Manuden and Stortford.
It then flows past Sawbridgeworth, before it changes direction and flows west past Harlow and Roydon. It finally empties into the Lea at Feildes Weir, Hoddesdon. This 14-mile (22km) section was canalised in the 18th century as the Stort Navigation.
