Local election results: Tory trio elected in Sawbridgeworth

By Paul Winspear

The Conservatives have been returned to represent Sawbridgeworth on East Herts Council after Thursday's local elections.

Current mayor, long-standing councillor and community stalwart Angela Alder was re-elected with 832 votes. She will be joined on the district council by Ruth Buckmaster (1,116 votes) and John Burmicz (836).

They replace Will Mortimer and Ruth's husband, Eric Buckmaster, a member of EHC's executive, who vacated his Sawbridgeworth seat to stand in Hunsdon and narrowly held off his Green Party rival to win there by 345 votes to 306.

Independent David Royle, who four years ago was elected to Sawbridgeworth Town Council as a Green Party candidate, got to within 100 votes of Cllrs Alder and Burmicz with 744.

Of the Liberal Democrat trio who stood, Annelise Berendt Furnace, who lives in Sheering Mill Lane, polled 728 votes – more than her two party colleagues from Stanstead Abbotts, Julia Davies (309) and Paul Breach (271), combined.

Labour duo Susan Hills and Colette Slater polled the fewest votes.

Across East Herts, there was no repeat of the whitewash for the Conservatives in 2015, when they won all 50 seats on the district council.

They now have 40 seats. The Lib Dems have six – they gained four in Bishop's Stortford and one in Stanstead Abbotts, and held Watton-at-Stone – while Labour won two seats in Hertford and the Green Party also won two, one each in Hertford and Ware.

The count took place at Ware's Wodson Park Sports Centre through the night. The first result was announced soon after 1am and the last one shortly before 5am.
