Two shoplifters distracted staff to steal cigarettes and tobacco from the Spar convenience store in Bishop's Stortford.

The incident at the shop on the corner of Stortford Hall Park and Dunmow Road happened at around 1.30pm on Saturday August 21.

A man and a woman entered and put a number of items in a basket. At the till point they asked for cigarettes and tobacco, which were placed in front of them. They then asked for a bottle of vodka.

PC Derek Lewin, of Stortford's neighbourhood policing team, said: "The shop assistant turned away to fetch the alcohol. The female shopper took the items and then made the excuse that she had to go outside to make a phone call.

"It was a distraction theft. The male then followed her outside, saying he was checking where she was, and they never returned to pay."
