Bishop's Stortford dad Simon Stevens cycled into the history books with son Reuben riding tandem.

The pair joined a barmy army of bikers in London on Sunday for the finale to four days of Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

They were part of a spectacular pageant involving more than 10,000 people in the streets around Buckingham Palace, including celebrities, servicemen and women, puppets and vintage vehicles.

Bicycle company Raleigh asked Simon to pedal in the procession because he collects eclectic and rare Choppers and BMX bikes from the 1970s and '80s.

He and Reuben, a 14-year-old student at The Bishop's Stortford High School, rode his one-of-a-kind Chopper in the Platinum peloton.

Simon confessed he bought the custom-built bike on eBay after "too many glasses of wine", but it has proved to be a wise investment. It is now worth almost £5,000 – and has delivered a priceless Jubilee memory for Simon, wife Tanya and sons Reuben and 17-year-old Jacob. The bike is definitely not for sale.

Simon met a host of celebrities during the pageant, including dancer Wayne Sleep, radio presenter Paul Gambaccini and Rylan Clark, former The X Factor star turned TV and radio presenter.

He said: "In the 1970s I had the Raleigh Tomahawk, which was the 'baby Chopper', in the same colour as my one now. But I didn't make it to a Chopper as a kid and went straight into BMXing.

"I used to compete at a fairly respectable level in flat and freestyle up until the age of 13 and I can still do some pretty impressive bunny hops even at the age of 51!"
