Stansted to plan street parties and beacon lighting to mark 80th anniversary of VE Day

Plans are afoot in Stansted to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Town and parish councils across the country are being invited to commemorate VE Day (Victory in Europe) on May 8 – the date in 1945 when Germany surrendered – with the lighting of a beacon.

Stansted Parish Council agreed at its January full council meeting to join in and has tasked its events working party to look at organising street parties or other celebratory events.

Cllr Geoffrey Sell said: “I think we should do something and work with other voluntary organisations in the village. It’s an important event and it would be remiss of us not to do something to mark it.”
