A 41-year-old woman from Stansted was arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving in the early hours of Tuesday (Dec 15) while police were carrying out targeted patrols in the village following an increase in thefts from cars.

Officers from Uttlesford's local policing team were responding to concerns flagged up by villagers on social media. Several had posted door cam footage showing suspects checking for unlocked vehicles under the cover of darkness.

Hooded assailants can be seen going along the streets testing doors and getting into vehicles that have been left unlocked to steal items.

Police did not find anyone acting suspiciously, but they did come across a suspect female driver in Church Road at around 5.15am.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs and possession of drugs. She was taken into custody and has since been released while investigations continue.
