Stortford family hit by fire have possessions worth £3,500 stolen while they move out for repairs

A family who moved out of their home in Bishop's Stortford while repairs were carried out following a fire returned to discover that possessions worth £3,500 had been stolen.

The victims, who live in Waytemore Road on the Havers estate, had been waiting eight months for their housing association to organise the remedial works on their fire-damaged living room.

On February 1, the family went to stay in a hotel while the job was carried out. When they returned on February 27 they discovered the items missing from their home.

They told police that various belongings, including treasured photographs, had been taken from a bedroom and bathroom.

They said that these two rooms were not damaged in the fire – only the living room was affected – so there had been no reason for anyone to enter these during their month-long stay away from home.
