Dominic Raab pressed in House of Commons by Bishop's Stortford MP Julie Marson on foreign aid

Bishop's Stortford's MP pressed Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to reassure her constituents that alleviating poverty in the developing world will still be a priority.

Conservative Julie Marson questioned Mr Raab in the House of Commons as he took control of the new Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, launched on Wednesday (Sept 2), which now incorporates the Department for International Development and its foreign aid budget.

The First Secretary batted away Labour concerns that the changes "did not bode well for a commitment to the poorest people across the planet".

Mrs Marson took up the theme: "I was delighted recently to visit my local Stort Valley branch of RESULTS UK. Will my right honourable friend join me in assuring that group of passionate and compassionate people that, for the reasons he outlined, these changes will only enhance our commitment and efficacy in alleviating poverty and providing better healthcare, sanitation, water and education across the developing world?"

RESULTS UK is a campaign group to influence political decisions that will bring an end to poverty.

Mr Raab said: "Public health outcomes are a very good illustration of where aid and development policy has clear, measurable and deliverable results. That is not just good for the countries in which we operate – we have seen the impact of reducing and eliminating the blight of polio, and there are other areas where we can focus just as well – or a moral responsibility, although I am impressed with the passion with which my honourable friend [Julie] spoke, but something that directly affects the people of this country."

Mrs Marson said later: "It's great that the Stort Valley RESULTS group had their concerns addressed directly by the Foreign Secretary.

"Ensuring that UK aid can be enhanced is a very positive thing and will help so many people accessing better healthcare and education. I am committed to working with Stort Valley RESULTS and the Government to ensure that this takes place."
