Bishop's Stortford College music star Justin Man appears on BBC Radio Essex

A star songwriter in the making from Bishop's Stortford College has featured on BBC Radio Essex.

Upper fifth pupil Justin Man, who is an accomplished pianist and arranger, has been interviewed by presenter Helen Scott and several of his compositions have been played for listeners.

Following the success of his debut piece, Let's Fly – which made it to the semi-finals of the 2019 International Songwriting Competition, placing it in the top 11% of over 18,000 entries – Justin was contacted by the station to take part in a live interview and radio premiere of his composition on the 'Evenings with Helen Scott' show.

Justin has since made two more live appearances, with Helen Scott and Victoria Polley, for the broadcast of his electronic composition Solar Bounce and most recently with his latest piece Feels, which made it to the semi-finals of the teens category in the International Songwriting Competition – Unsigned Only 2020.

The annual International Songwriting Competition aims to give aspiring musicians and songwriters an opportunity to have their songs heard in a professional, international arena. Previous winners include Gotye, Bastille and Passenger.

Performing as JM-88, Justin was one of 64 teen semi-finalists out of 990 overall. He was also the only teens category semi-finalist representing England in the entire Unsigned Only 2020 competition of over 7,000 entries.

Justin first entered the spotlight aged 10 when he became a 'Westfield Presents Piano' artist and now he regularly performs on stage at two London shopping malls.

He has amassed more than 50 trophies while showcasing his talents, including his triumph aged 14 in last year's Bishop's Stortford Rotary Young Musician competition.

College senior school music teacher Iago Nunez said: "Justin's track is very well produced and already has some trademarks of his own 'sound'. It is very impressive that he is already generating a well-defined composition style."

Justin's compositions are available on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/track/357NYmpU0h30Z6o57ScizQ?si=435wnq9lS4OtNzvYg and on Apple Music at C9ASA.
