Sports Direct and Superdrug shoplifter jumps into River Stort to evade police

A shoplifter tried to escape from police by jumping into the River Stort and wading to the other side.

Officers were called on Tuesday August 6 at 4.55pm after a woman set off the security alarm when she walked into Sports Direct in Jackson Square.

When staff challenged her she told them she had just bought cosmetics from another shop. She then took clothing, removed the security tags and fled.

Police set out to find her. They saw her in Castle Park but when they tried to detain her she leapt into the water. She was later arrested in Hockerill Street.

Officers searched her and found sets of teeth whitening kits which had been stolen from Superdrug. They also discovered she was wanted for theft at Tesco in Harlow.

  • Georgia Wilshire, 30, has been charged with three counts of theft.
