Man taken to hospital in critical condition after car mounts pavement in front of Domino’s in Northgate End, Bishop’s Stortford

A man has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after a car mounted the pavement in front of Domino’s pizza parlour in Bishop’s Stortford town centre.

The suspected “medical episode” incident, involving a Toyota Yaris, happened outside the Northgate End takeaway shortly before 1.15pm on Monday (June 10).

The road at the scene was closed for much of the afternoon as emergency services – including an air ambulance – dealt with the aftermath.

Members of all three local emergency services – East of England Ambulance Service, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) and Hertfordshire Constabulary – sent paramedics, firefighters and police.

Northgate End was closed in both directions between its junction with North Street and the roundabout at Nissan dealer Glyn Hopkin. At 4pm the carriageway going towards North Street was open. By 5pm the road had fully reopened and Domino’s was trading.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: “An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, two hazardous area response team vehicles, an ambulance officer vehicle and East Anglian air ambulance were called to Northgate End following reports of a road traffic collision.

Royal Papworth Hospital is a specialist heart and lung hospital.

A spokesperson for police said that officers were called to the scene at 1.15pm after reports that a car had “struck a building”.

A spokesperson for HFRS said that it was called at 1.24pm to a report of “a vehicle colliding with a building” in Northgate End. One crew from Bishop’s Stortford fire station was sent to the scene, where firefighters made the car safe and assisted the ambulance service with medical care for one person.
