Parents of students at the Herts and Essex High School have been urged to ensure children do not walk alone to or from the Warwick Road secondary.

The warning follows an incident last Wednesday evening (October 13). Hertfordshire Constabulary confirmed officers were called at around 6pm.

According to a spokeswoman, a pupil was waiting for a family member outside the school when she saw a "suspicious-looking" man walk past.

She informed the school and police were called but despite an "extensive search of the area" no one matching his description was found and no further reports were received. He did not attempt to speak to or touch the girl.

The police reiterated general safety advice to the school and Herts and Essex told families: "We have had a request from the local police to remind our families of the need to ensure that students are not unaccompanied while walking to and from school.

"There will be times of the day when hundreds of people are around, but if a student arrives particularly early or leaves late after a co-curricular activity please do ensure their safe transportation."
