Hunsdon pub Fox & Hounds runner-up in Observer Food Monthly Best Sunday Lunch award
Hertfordshire's only Bib Gourmand restaurant, the Fox and Hounds in Hunsdon, has added a new accolade to its resumé.
The country pub owned and run by chef James Rix and his wife, Bianca, for 15 years was runner-up in the best Sunday lunch category for the East of England region in the Observer Food Monthly Awards.
The Sunday broadsheet supplement's verdict was: "The menu may travel around the globe, but it's done with a sure hand and safe flavours – spaghetti vongole; crab tacos and guacamole, and the real interest on a Sunday comes from the Josper oven. Hope there's still whole West Mersea lemon sole with samphire."
Bianca said: "We are thrilled to have been awarded runner-up in the East of England area for 'Best Sunday Lunch' in the Observer Food Monthly Awards. Competition is tough in this category. Recognition at this level is praise indeed."
The Fox and Hounds – which is just eight miles from Bishop's Stortford – offers a set menu on a Sunday: £25.50 for two courses or £32.50 for three courses. Bianca added: "There is a supplement of £5 for beef, and we find people are happy to pay a little more for the quality of the meat.
"We use roast rib of 32-day, dry-aged English longhorn beef and our customers always comment on how tasty it is. The rib of beef is roasted in the oven and finished in the Josper oven. This gives the meat a subtle smoky flavour and keeps it moist and tender."
Braised shoulder of lamb and potato dauphinoise to share is also a popular winter warmer.
"Sunday is a real family affair with a lovely relaxed atmosphere – it's our busiest day of the week," said Bianca.
"Our large dining room is perfect for larger get-togethers. With open fires and the cosy bar, it's the perfect Sunday lunch venue.
"People enjoy the drive out to the pretty Hertfordshire countryside. There are lots of lovely walks from our doorstep and we're dog-friendly too."
James previously worked alongside chefs Gary Rhodes and Alastair Little. Earlier this year, the pub retained the coveted accolade from the Michelin Guide for 2019 it has held since 2012. The Bib Gourmand is diners' assurance of "exceptionally good food at moderate prices" – Bib (Bibendum) is the nickname for the Michelin Man, the corporate logo for more than a century.
James and Bianca have also earned a place in the Good Food Guide 2020. Their resataurant is one of just 10 in Hertfordshire to make the cut. For more details see foxandhounds-hunsdon.co.uk.
