The broadsheet described the Dunmow Road secondary’s performance as “astonishing” as it took top spot in the rankings for state comprehensive schools.

The college is particularly proud as the recognition covers both IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma and GCSE results.

The guide, published at the weekend, highlighted Hockerill’s performance in its editorial: “Hockerill Anglo-European College in Bishop’s Stortford – selective for just 10% of its intake – achieves an astonishing performance in this year’s state school rankings with a rise of 30 places on last year, after nearly two-thirds of all higher-level IB exams were graded 7 or 6, the highest two awards.”

The analysis, which is undertaken by The Sunday Times, encompasses state and independent schools, primary and secondary education and all the leading exam systems, and goes on to identify “the 2,000 highest-achieving schools in the UK, ranked by their recent examination results”.

Hockerill principal Richard Markham said: “I am delighted that the hard work and effort of our staff and students have been publicly acknowledged. This is a wonderful accolade for all those associated with the college and I am exceptionally proud of the college’s amazing success.”
