Greek patisserie and bakery Hellenic Bakeries Herts opens in Bishop's Stortford

Traditional Greek pastries, desserts and bread are tempting tastebuds in Bishop's Stortford after Hellenic Bakeries Herts opened on Saturday (Sept 5).

Business consultants Dr Anastasia Giannopoulou and Dr Thanos Papanaklis opened the patisserie and bakery in the Riverside Wharf premises previously occupied by estate agent Fordyce Furnivall, which has moved next door.

They said: "We have many friends in Bishop's Stortford and have been visiting the area regularly. We live close by in Hoddesdon and we loved the vibe of the town so we decided to open our shop here."

The couple plan to open seven days a week, from 6am to 8pm, and have created 10 part- and full-time jobs.

Married for 21 years, with a daughter, Konstantina Papanaklis, 20, starting her last year at university, Anastasia is a business consultant specialising in digital transformation and Thanos is an IT business consultant.

"We both have over 20 years' experience in our fields and have been running our business consultancy since 2013, however we were looking for a different type of business that would not require us to be in front of a computer constantly. As food lovers, the choice was only natural..." they said.

The shop is serving traditional Greek pastries and desserts, a variety of bread, sandwiches, snacks, coffee and some Greek deli groceries.

The couple hope their Bishop's Stortford branch will be the first of a series. The Hellenic brand already has outlets in Brighton, East Sussex, and Wood Green, London.
