The Bishop’s Stortford High School celebrates A-level results day

A-level students who left The Bishop’s Stortford High School earlier this summer returned on Thursday morning to collect their results - with the headteacher's praises for a "phenomenal" set of grades from a "fantastic" cohort ringing in their ears.

Two boys, Thomas White and William Worthy, achieved a clean sweep of four A* grades – with the latter being one of five who are now destined to further their studies at the Oxbridge universities. Six more got three A*s.

Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, students at the London Road secondary were celebrating an "incredible" set of A-level and BTEC results, with "huge numbers" achieving all A* and A grades.

Head Dale Reeve said: “I am absolutely delighted with this phenomenal set of results. We had a fantastic cohort of students who have always shown tremendous promise and they certainly delivered when it mattered most.

"They showed great maturity and resilience in the face of the disruption posed by Covid and their dedication to their studies has been rewarded with some truly stellar results.

"Their commitment to our extra-curricular programme has also been second to none and it only appears to have enhanced their academic outcomes. These students managed to achieve enormous success in sport, debating and public speaking, as well as produce superb performances in concerts and our school musical, so I know they’ll be taking with them the qualities and characteristics required for success at university, an apprenticeship or employment.

"I wish them all the very best of luck as they begin the next stage in their lives. As ever, the students could not have done it without the huge support and dedication of the staff at TBSHS.”

Rob Stark, head of sixth form, added: “I am thrilled for our sixth-formers that they have achieved such outstanding results. They were a brilliant bunch of students to work with who really embraced the Black & Gold spirit.

"The team-building trip and their September induction at the beginning of Year 12 meant they gelled incredibly well right from the start, and they maintained an awesome attitude towards their studies throughout the two years.

"The combination of effort and talent has ensured that so many students will now head off to the best universities across the country, including five heading to Oxford or Cambridge, and others will start apprenticeships with high-profile employers like Deloitte, Savills and GlaxoSmithKline. They should all be very proud of their achievements, we certainly are.”

Among the highest-performing A-level students were:

4 A*s - Thomas White, engineering at Warwick; William Worthy, physics at Hertford College, Oxford University

3A*, 1A - Luca Campbell, computer science at Warwick; Max O’Reilly, physics at King’s College London
