Thief breaks into Sweeney Todd cast member’s car at South Mill Arts

A cast member of a show at Bishop’s Stortford’s theatre returned to her car after a performance to find it had been broken into and her son’s disabled Blue Badge stolen.

The woman, who preferred not to be named, had parked her silver Vauxhall Zafira under a street lamp in Southmill Road while she performed in Bishop’s Stortford Musical Theatre Company’s production of Sweeney Todd at South Mill Arts.

She said she passed the car at around 10pm on Friday (Nov 18) after finishing the show on her way, with other cast members, to have a meal at a restaurant and does not believe the thief had struck then.

But when she returned to the car at around 11.30pm she saw her driver’s window was smashed in and the Blue Badge had been stolen.

“The car was parked right opposite the trading estate and they’ve got all their lights on in their yard,” said the woman.

“There were loads of items in the back but they just took the disabled badge. I reckon they just peeped in and saw it.”

She said another member of the company had been victim of a similar break-in and another had their car stolen from the same area a couple of years ago. She was surprised the area was a target for thieves as it was well lit and fairly busy.

The woman returned to the theatre on Saturday to perform in the final two shows.
