Thorn Grove Primary School trio impress Poetry By Heart judges

Three well-versed pupils at Thorn Grove Primary School have won poetry awards.

The youngsters entered this year’s Poetry By Heart competition, a national contest for students in England.

Reflecting on the success of Georgia, Abigail and Constance, deputy head Jayne Lilley said: “The children feel very proud of themselves for achieving these results in a national competition.

“As a Voice 21 school, we are committed to embedding oracy skills into the curriculum, teaching, and wider school life, helping our pupils to find their voice and become confident communicators.”

Youngsters in Key Stages 2 to 5 had to choose a poem, learn it by heart, and upload a video of their performance.

There were two categories - the Classic, where solo entrants learn two poems, one published in or after 1914 and one from before 1914, and a Freestyle class.

From over 2,000 entries, judged by poets, poetry experts and educators, Freestyle contestants Georgia (Year 5) and Constance (Year 4) received Highly Commended awards and Abigail (Year 3) entered the Classic category and was awarded Commended. All children received personal feedback.
